Carb Options on HCG Diet

An HCG weight loss plan combines HCG hormone and a very strict diet plan. The plan allows you to limit your intake of calorie to 500 calories a day. The food options are limited. You are allowed to have a serving of protein, fruits, veggies and a very small portion of carbohydrate on the HCG Diet. The proteins are mostly consists of leaner meat such as chicken, turkey and fish.

During your very low calorie diet, you are to cut out all forms of sugar and starches. This includes bread, cereals and pasta because of their high starch content. However, there are two carb options that you can have during your 500 calorie diet. These are the Grissini Breadstick and the Melba toast.

  • Melba Toast– You can have a serving of this carb for both lunch and dinner during your VLCD. You can have it as a snack option between meals. One serving of Melba toast contains 3 pieces of toast. Each serving will give you a total of 60 calories with only 13 grams of carb. Well, that’s very low compared to other carb alternatives. There are a lot of flavors of Melba toast But be careful because some melba toast contains more sugar than other. Always remember that when you are on HCG, your body is extremely sensitive to sugar.
  • Grissini Breadstick– This is another carb option that Dr. Simeons incorporated into the hcg diet to satisfy your body’s need to chew aside from the crunchy Melba toast. You can have one breadstick for your lunch and one for your dinner each day. Like the Melba toast, Grissini breadstick also comes in a variety of flavors that are quite delicious.

Melba toast or Grissini Breadstick?

It’s a matter of personal preferences. What’s important is that you’ll watch your consumption of these two carb choices. A huge number of hcg dieters who have tried both of these carb options preferred the breadstick over the toast. The protocol calls for two servings of carb per day. That’s one carb option per meal. You can have one toast for one meal and one breadstick for the other meal. If you want, you can use them to mimic croutons over your salad or top them with your chicken.

Adjusting your hCG Dosage

Before you think on adjust your dose of hCG let us identify what hunger is and isn’t. Hunger is not the noises your stomach makes or the “growling”.  It is not an empty feeling. They are perfectly normal. But true hunger is a gnawing ache in your stomach that is distracting and almost painful. You may want to put anything in your mouth just to make the sensation go away. True hunger makes you want to eat even those foods that aren’t hcg approved.

True hunger is a sign that you need to adjust your dose. Your dose may be too high or too low. Most of the time, the dose is too high and not too low. A higher dose can make you hungrier than a lower dose.

Situation 1

Morning of your first very low calorie diet, you woke up hungry even though you’ve done a terrific job of loading. You have not started with your diet, yet there you are feeling hungry.

What to do:

You cannot skip yet until you had at least 4 hcg injections. On your 3rd day, you lower your dose by 50 IU. Say if you are taking 200 IU, make it 150 IU. The next day increase it to 175 IU. The quick adjustment should fix you right up.

Situation 2

You feel ravenous after several days or weeks on the diet. Its either you metabolize hcg slowly so it crept up too high or too fast that you need a little more.

What to do:

Skip your next injection and pay attention to how you feel after 4:00 pm and in the evening. If your hunger fades you can lower your dose by 25 IU. But if your hunger doesn’t get better, lower your dose even more. Try to lower it to 150 IU if you’ve been on a 200 IU or 125 IU if your previous dose is 175 IU.

You might want to consider the following before adjusting your dose.

  1. Double check your menu. See to it that you’ve not eaten anything that can trigger your body to send hunger signals.
  2. Are you dehydrated?
  3. Check your hCG dosage.
  4. Are you having your HCG shot at the same time every day?

Diet Mistakes while on HCG

The HCG diet is not that complicated as it looks like. It’s in fact doable. But as you go along the diet, there will a come a time where you can slip up and make mistakes. And the more mistakes you make the more difficult it will be for you to lose weight.

To get the most out from this diet, you should avoid these common HCG diet mistakes.

Diet mistake #1– Not doing the HCG diet protocol properly

The HCG diet protocol is not that detailed but there are some requirements that you need to stick strictly. The requirements include a very specific list of approved HCG diet food, HCG approved beverages, HCG approved seasoning and HCG approved exercise. Take time to read the requirements to get the most out from this diet.

Diet mistake #2- Guessing your food proportions

It’s all about the portion control. To lose more weight you need to learn how to portion your food rather than just guessing.

The HCG diet portion size is very specific and you should be careful. The specific portion size will ensure that you don’t eat too many calories and your meal is not too large. You need to be accurate with your protein choices. Per serving is exactly 100 grams or 3.5 ounces. For fruits and vegetables, check the precise serving size of HCG diet vegetables and fruits here.

Diet mistake #3- Intense exercise

Doing intense exercise especially during your VLCD is potentially dangerous. It can cause fatigue, dehydration and more. Intense exercise can also force you to eat more calories causing your weight loss to stall.

Diet mistake #4- Using of canned fruits and vegetables

Canned fruits and vegetable have added ingredients that can cause a stall in your weight loss. Canned vegetables are high in sodium and other additives that can interact with how HCG hormone works. They won’t have as high nutrient as the fresh one due to the canning process. Your best bet…regularly shop for fresh fruits and veggies for the week.

Diet mistake #5- Using the wrong cut of meat

Be careful with steak and cuts of beef. Not every type is HCG approved. T-bone steaks, for example, have a higher percentage of fats compared with other beef cuts.

Diet mistake #6- Wrong beverages

Not all drinks are allowed. HCG diet offers only a specific list of approved beverages and you should check that out. Unapproved drinks like artificially sweetened ones can make your weight loss difficult.

Diet mistake #7- Using of cooking spray

Do not use cooking spray when cooking. Instead, use a non-stick pan. If you want, use broth as a substitute for oil. You can grill or steam them. It won’t require you to use any fats.

Smart Cheating on HCG Diet

Cheating is not allowed during Phase 2 of your HCG diet. And you know this by heart. But there are times that you just want to freak out and grab those delicious piece of cake then eat to satisfaction.

It’s not exactly ideal to cheat especially during P2. I’m not encouraging you either because it’s a big NO in the protocol.

But if you can’t really help yourself there are healthier ways to cheat.

  1. Do not cheat on carbs

Carbs contain fuels needed by your body but they have little nutrition compared with proteins, fruits and vegetables. So, stay away from carbs. Make time to eat healthy foods instead of eating foods that will make you happy such as sugar and carbs. Prepare your foods ahead of time. Keep plenty of foods high in nutrition but low in carbs like protein, fruits and veggies. Your calorie count may end up higher but still, you are avoiding carbs.

  1. Load Properly

This is a cheating tip because if you will not load properly on your HCG diet, technically you are cheating on yourself. HCG diet loading phase is extremely essential. If you will not load well on FATS (not carbs) you will definitely encounter some difficulties as you proceed with Phase 2 of your HCG diet.

  1. Cheat on proteins

Proteins provide plenty of nutrition needed for your weight loss hcg diet. So when you feel that you are hungry and have to freak out and cheat, cheat on protein. Egg white, protein shakes and beef jerky are rich in proteins.

  1. Keep some approved veggies and fruit handy

Veggies and fruits are great when you are in a situation where you are stuck either trying to come up with a healthy Phase 2 meal or not eating at all while you are not.  Veggies like cherry tomatoes can make a great snack that you can easily grab when you are hungry. Fruits like apples, orange and grapefruits are great for snacks too and they are very handy.  You can keep some in your bag when you go to work or in your car.
